Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior official stated the attack rendered him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
