Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
