The Trump Administration to Distribute 50% Snap Benefits in November

The US government announced it would grant limited aid to numerous food stamp recipients as the continuing government shutdown neared a record-breaking length.

Benefit Cut Details

Amid increasing concern for the approximately 42 million people enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Department of Agriculture confirmed it would employ contingency money to maintain payments, albeit at just 50% of the usual allotment participants typically get.

Funding for the assistance formally ran out on the weekend due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th consecutive day with no clear signal of completion.

Judicial Proceedings

The announcement came in a judicial submission after earlier denials to provide urgent funding on purported legal grounds. A federal judge had determined the administration could not deny program funds due to the shutdown.

After the legal directive, the administration stated it would be "privileged" to provide necessary funding for the program.

Execution Challenges

Officials noted that funds could start flowing by Wednesday, but highlighted the need for further guidance from the legal system on how to properly transfer funds for SNAP support.

  • Some local governments have warned it will take multiple days or even longer periods to issue assistance to vulnerable families.
  • Crowds have been observed at pantries throughout the country.
  • In multiple locations, large venue areas were transformed into distribution sites.

State Emergency Responses

Multiple authorities, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced crisis measures to allocate temporary funds for benefits. However, these amounts were projected to be a small portion of the typical government funding.

The government expenditures for SNAP amount to approximately $8 billion each month in the United States.
