Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of his move to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
