Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
