Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
